Historically, pearls have been considered to symbolize purity, wisdom, and resilience. Ancient kings would adorn themselves with complex pearl ropes to indicate their wealth. However more recently, pearls have been considered a more feminine accessory. Following the investion of cultured pearls in the early 20th century, pearls became more popular due to their increased accessibility to a wider audience. This is notably seen in the 'Roaring Twenties' when flapper girls would accessorize their short, loose dresses with multiple pearl necklaces of varying lengths, reflecting the rebellious yet sophisticated extravagance of the decade. Today, pearl jewellery is now seen as a timeless, elegant addition to any outfit; formal or casual. 

Pearls and marriage

There is a strong connection between pearls and weddings in many cultures:

• White pearls align with the purity aspect of many Western marriage traditions.
• In Hinduism, pearls are incorporated into the bride's attire to signify her grace and the couple's comittment to one another.
• Ancient Greeks associated pearls with Aphrodite, the Goddess of love. They believed pearls would bring happiness to newlyweds.
• Asian bridal traditions invove wearing pearl necklaces to symbolise fertility.

Although there is a myth about pearls being unlucky, it is widely considered that pearls given with pure intentions symbolise purity, fertility and life's natural cycles, and is there a gift with purer intentions than an engagement ring?
